A season-by-season lawn care calendar for Melbourne

Mowing height, watering, feeding and weed control — what your lawn actually needs at each point in the Melbourne year.

Spring

Growth takes off. Lift your mowing frequency to weekly or fortnightly, drop the catcher, and apply a slow-release fertiliser once soil temperatures are consistently up.

This is also the best window for dealing with bindii and clover, before they set seed and spread through summer.

Summer

Raise the mower height. Longer leaf shades the soil, holds moisture and keeps the lawn green far longer through a dry spell.

Water deeply and infrequently — two good soaks a week beats a light sprinkle every day, which just trains roots to sit near the surface.

Autumn

The most underrated season for lawns. Growth slows but roots are still active, so a feed now sets you up for a much stronger spring.

Keep leaves off the grass. A wet leaf mat left for a fortnight will leave dead yellow patches behind.

Winter

Mow occasionally and high. Stay off waterlogged lawns where you can — foot and mower traffic on saturated soil causes compaction that shows up as thin, patchy areas come spring.

The one rule that matters most

Never take off more than a third of the leaf in a single cut. Scalping is the single most common cause of the brown, stressed lawns we get called out to look at.

Rather someone else did it?

We look after gardens right across Melbourne's inner east and bayside, on a schedule that suits you.
